Hives and Boxes

Explore the main hive systems used in beekeeping, specialised nucleus formats, and rational boxes used for stingless-bee husbandry. Compare architecture, use, compatibility, advantages, and limitations.

Choosing a hive

A hive is more than a box: it is a system of components, dimensions, and management practices. The choice affects inspection ease, the weight lifted by the beekeeper, material availability, and compatibility with frames, supers, nuclei, and accessories.

Commercial or historical names do not always refer to a single size. Langstroth, Dadant, and several Meliponini box models have regional variants. Before mixing components, confirm the dimensions used by the design or manufacturer.

In meliponiculture, the box must respect the biology and nest architecture of the species. There is no universal box for every bee in the Meliponini tribe.
