How is a worker bee born?

Worker bees make up the majority of a colony's population and perform almost all the tasks necessary for its survival. Their development begins with a fertilized egg laid by the queen. During the larval stage, the nutrition they receive directs their development into a typically non-reproductive female, adapted to the various functions of the community.

The birth of a worker bee begins when the queen lays a fertilized egg in a cell intended for worker bee rearing. For about three days, the embryo develops inside the egg. After hatching, a small, white, legless larva emerges, which is entirely dependent on the care of nurse bees.

In the first few days, the larva receives royal jelly. Later, its diet changes to include other foods produced or prepared by the worker bees, combined with honey and pollen available in the colony. This change in diet is one of the main differences between the development of a worker bee and that of a queen, which continues to receive an abundant diet based on royal jelly throughout the entire larval period.

As it grows, the larva progressively fills the cell. When the feeding phase ends, the worker bees seal it with a wax cap. Inside, the larva forms a cocoon, transforms into a pupa, and gradually develops the structures of the adult bee, such as wings, legs, eyes, and body covering.

In Apis mellifera, the young worker bee emerges approximately 21 days after the egg is laid. In the first days of adult life, it usually remains inside the hive. It starts by cleaning cells and, over time, takes on other roles, such as feeding the brood, caring for the queen, producing wax, receiving nectar, and helping to regulate the conditions of the nest. Later, it may become a guard or forager.

In stingless bees (meliponines), the general phases are similar, but larval food is usually placed in the cell before the egg is laid, and the cell is sealed shortly afterward. The duration of development varies considerably between species, so there is no single value applicable to all stingless bees.
