What Is Capped Brood?
Capped brood refers to larvae and pupae whose cells have been sealed by worker bees with a wax capping. This stage marks the final transformations before the emergence of the adult bee.

What Is Capped Brood?
The capping marks a new stage in development. After several days of feeding, the larva stretches out inside the cell and begins preparing for metamorphosis. Worker bees then seal the cell with a porous capping that protects the brood and allows the necessary gas exchanges for development.
Inside the cell, the larva transforms into a pupa and gradually develops wings, legs, eyes, mouthparts, and other structures of the adult bee. When this process is complete, the young bee breaks through the capping and emerges to begin adult life.
During an inspection, capped brood should exhibit a continuous and uniform pattern. Small gaps may be normal, but a large number of empty cells or sunken, perforated, or irregular cappings warrants closer observation. These signs alone do not allow identification of the cause and should be interpreted in conjunction with the colony's other indicators.
It is also important to distinguish between worker, queen, and drone capped brood. In Apis mellifera, drone cappings are generally higher and more rounded, while worker cappings tend to be flatter. Queen brood develops in queen cells, which are easily identifiable by their characteristic shape.
In stingless bees (meliponines), the organization of the brood is different, but the protected development phase still exists. The shape of the cells and the arrangement of the brood vary according to the species.
