What is a queenless colony?

A queenless colony is a honey bee colony that has lost its queen and has not yet replaced her. This condition deeply affects the colony's behavior, brood production, and survival.

The queen is the only individual with full reproductive capacity in a colony of Apis mellifera. When she disappears—whether due to death, accident, disease, or during a replacement process—the colony enters a period of queenlessness. If it fails to produce or accept a new queen, the situation can seriously compromise its survival.

In the first few days, the colony may maintain seemingly normal behavior, especially if eggs and young larvae from the last brood cycle are still present.
