Recommended when
- Energy needs to be provided in solid or semi-solid form.
- The colony can reach the feed placed directly above the cluster.
- The goal is to avoid introducing a large amount of water into the hive.
Avoid when
- The colony cannot reach the area where the feed is placed.
- Natural forage and stored food are sufficient.
- Temperature or humidity favour the rapid degradation of the paste.
Ingredients
- g White powdered sugar, without starch or other additives
- g 2:1 syrup, already prepared and cooled
Preparation
- Place the powdered sugar in a clean container.
- Gradually add the cooled syrup while kneading continuously.
- Mix until you obtain a firm, homogeneous paste that does not run.
- Shape it into a thin slab and package it in food-contact-safe material.
- Open only the surface that will be accessible to the bees.
Application
Placement
Directly on top of the frames, above and as close as possible to the cluster, without crushing bees.
Initial serving
Use a portion that fits the available space and check it before adding more.
Monitoring
Monitor consumption, humidity, mould, and whether the bees are actually reaching the feed.
Frequency
Replace it when it has been consumed or degraded.
Warnings
- Confirm that the powdered sugar does not contain starches, anti-caking agents, or unsuitable flavourings.
- This preparation should not be confused with cooked fondant.
- Do not add honey of unknown origin.
