What is the lifecycle of a worker bee?

As it ages, the worker bee begins to feed larvae and the queen, produces wax, participates in comb construction, receives and processes nectar brought by foragers, and helps regulate the temperature and humidity of the nest. The distribution of these tasks depends not only on age but also on the colony's needs. In exceptional situations, a worker bee may perform tasks typical of earlier or later life stages.

Once it completes its orientation flights, the worker bee starts regularly leaving the colony to collect nectar, pollen, water, and propolis. At this stage, it becomes a forager, performing a demanding activity that involves thousands of flights throughout its life. This is also the stage where it faces the greatest risk due to predators, weather conditions, and physical wear.

In Apis mellifera, the longevity of worker bees varies significantly with the time of year. Worker bees born during spring and summer typically live only a few weeks due to the intense foraging activity. In contrast, winter worker bees can live for several months, ensuring the colony's survival until favorable conditions return.

In stingless bees (meliponines), the sequence of roles is similar, although the duration of the different phases and longevity vary among species.
